Brenden Mulligan, the author of the article, is one of LaunchKit creators, a tool set for iOS developers. He also works on a mobile and web-app Cluster which allows to create personal networks on the basis of common interests and experience. Also, Brenden is the author of ArtistData and OneSheet projects.

Cluster has become my first mobile native app. Working on it, I’ve realized that I’ve learned so many things including those not concerning web. When you create a web-app, you only create a page for visitors. But when you develop a native app, you not only offer people to download something, but also ask them to give you access to their location and personal data. And these are very different relationships.

If you release an app and make screenshots for it, you ask yourself the questions:

 

  • Should I do a portrait or album orientation?
  • Should I use an iPhone? A white or a black one?
  • Should there be captions on screenshots?

 

If you do something from the above mentioned, will it affect app featuring by Apple?

In order to find answers to the questions, Appbot company decided to examine 2 app TOPs for iPhone, a free and a paid one, and the apps which Apple featured in the USA. Obviously, it’s only a layer relevant for a period of time and AppStore changes constantly.

Today we will share with you our experience of how to create a video for App Store page. What can a developer do? What can you outsource? What features would be better to refuse from?

A video in an app description is arranged on the place of the first screenshot and in App Store search it’s on the most visible place.

You can choose any frame you want for the preview. It’s possible to upload the video and screenshots only while updating. You can upload different videos for various devices, but you can’t localize them yet: only one video for all the languages. We hope that they’ll eliminate this injustice some time.

People pay a lot of attention to app reviews in App Store and Google Play as they help them to choose the right one. Along with app screenshots and description, for sure. Yes, the most important thing for an app is to be in the first lines of Top Charts. But there isn’t enough place for all the apps as there are millions of them while Top Charts aren’t numerous. And in every Top Chart there are only 100 apps. There are also Featured apps and any app can get to this category. Some say you still need to have some friends in Apple. Or your app must be really innovative which is hard to achieve.
